Grasp the Sparrow’s Tail, the debut release from Breana Gilcher and her project Petrichor, blends the frameworks of traditional chamber music ensemble and jazz trio to traverse the improvisational eddies between Baroque, avant-garde and noise musics, seeking a musical home in the currents between. Having just emerged from the solitude of the pandemic, this music was recorded over a week’s time in my mentor’s cozy, creaky home with birds nesting on the porch and a field of cacti outside. Grasp the Sparrow’s Tail was made with the autophysiopsychic musical intention described by Yusef Lateef: music from one’s physical, mental, and spiritual self.
